Porsche 911 (992.1) Carrera 4S, 2019–2024 — the all-wheel-drive S that set the tone for the 992 era. Revealed at the end of 2018 and delivered from 2019, it arrived with a wider stance for all Carreras, staggered 20/21-inch wheels and a tech-forward cockpit that still kept a big analogue rev counter front and centre. With 450 PS on tap and Porsche Traction Management sending torque to both axles, the 4S quickly became the everyday performance benchmark in the range.
Under the skin sat the 9A2 evo 3.0-litre biturbo flat-six, reworked with new turbochargers and a central-mounted intercooler for cooler charge temps and crisper response. The debut of an 8‑speed PDK (engineered with space for future hybrid hardware) tightened acceleration to supercar levels, while the optional 7‑speed manual returned in 2020 to please purists. The 992 also premiered Wet Mode, using acoustic sensors in the front wheel housings to detect water and precondition stability systems — a classic piece of Porsche pragmatism in a digital age.
As a product, the 4S broadened the 911’s bandwidth yet again. Adaptive aero, wider tracks, PASM as standard and optional rear-axle steering gave it the uncanny blend of suppleness and bite that reviewers raved about. Magazines praised its steering accuracy and real-world speed, often calling it the definitive “one-car garage.” The criticism? A touch more mass and a cabin dotted with haptic switches that divided opinion — minor quibbles in the face of its depth of ability.
Model-year tweaks kept it current: Cabriolet joined early; the Targa 4S returned in 2020; manuals rolled out more widely; and by MY2022 the upgraded PCM 6.0 infotainment added Android Auto and smarter voice control. Brakes, chassis options and assistance systems (PDCC, rear-axle steering, Night Vision, InnoDrive) gave buyers a wide canvas. Production of the first-cycle 992.1 wound down in 2024 ahead of the facelifted 992.2.
Pop culture helped, too. A Miami Blue 992 Carrera 4S stole scenes in Bad Boys for Life (2020), echoing the 964 from the original film and cementing the 992 in mainstream memory. Launch films and track events fronted by Porsche ambassadors (think former F1 driver Mark Webber) underscored its dual character: engaging on a B-road, tireless on a motorway, and devastating on track days. Against rivals like the Mercedes‑AMG GT, Aston Martin Vantage, Audi R8 and Nissan GT‑R, the 4S didn’t just compete — it defined the “everyday supercar” brief and, as ever, acted as Porsche’s brand lodestar, the car that makes the business case for everything from GT3s to Taycans.
