Description and Key Highlights of this Example

  • Iconic naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder engine from the BMW E30

  • Highly sought-after coupé version

  • Remarkable ownership history with one owner from 1986 to 2021

  • Rare configuration with BBS wheels and beige leather interior

Our BMW 320i E30, first registered on 7 May 1986, currently has 185,500 km on the clock. Originally French, it is currently registered in France and has had three owners since first registration.

This example is presented in an elegant black shade, paired with a beige leather interior. The bodywork shows some minor cosmetic imperfections typical for its age, while the original interior is well preserved. The dashboard instruments are fully functional.

Under the bonnet, the 2.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine produces 125 hp and is paired with a manual gearbox. This BMW 320i thus offers an authentic driving experience, true to the spirit of the early generations of the 3 Series.

This example has been maintained within the BMW network and by specialists. It comes with a stamped service book and numerous invoices, some dating back to 1991. Over €1,000 worth of maintenance invoices were gathered between March and July.

Here are the most recent services performed:

Consumables are in generally good condition. The rear tyres are in good condition, the front tyres are in average condition, and all four brakes are in good condition.

A modification has been made to the vehicle with the installation of Bilstein shock absorbers.

Here are the equipment and options of this example:

  • Phase 1.5

  • Coupé version

  • BBS wheels

  • Beige leather interior

The bodywork has been repainted during its life to maintain a good overall condition over time. The interior and headliner are original.

No expenses are expected.

This BMW is accompanied by its administrative status certificate, service book, invoices, technical inspection, CarVertical report, and two keys.

The CarVertical report is available here:

CarVertical Report

This BMW 320i E30 stands out for its coupé configuration, beige leather interior, BBS wheels, and especially its particularly interesting history. A BMW enthusiast, its former owner kept it for several decades, from 1986 to 2021. The vehicle then had two further owners. Its current seller is parting with it to make space in their garage after acquiring another vehicle through us.

Historique du Modèle

Launched in 1982, the E30 generation 3 Series was BMW’s decisive step from niche sports saloon to the benchmark of the compact executive class. Styled under Claus Luthe, it sharpened the E21’s formula with crisper lines, better aerodynamics and, for the first time in a 3 Series, a four‑door saloon (from 1983). The 320i sat at the heart of the range in Europe: a smooth, rev‑happy 2.0‑litre straight‑six that delivered the classic BMW blend of refinement and balance without the higher costs of the 323i/325i.

Under its bonnet, the M20B20 single‑cam six offered around 129 hp (market and catalyst depending), fed by Bosch injection and driving the rear wheels through a slick Getrag 5‑speed or a ZF 4‑speed automatic. The E30 chassis—MacPherson struts up front, semi‑trailing arms at the rear—gave the 320i a neutral, adjustable balance that road testers of the day repeatedly praised. Contemporary reviews in Europe highlighted the car’s creamy six‑cylinder smoothness, precise steering and long‑legged motorway manners, while noting that the semi‑trailing‑arm rear could be lively in the wet if provoked.

Competition was fierce. Mercedes‑Benz’s new 190E (W201) arrived the same year, bringing Stuttgart sophistication to the same segment, while Audi’s 80 and Alfa Romeo’s rear‑drive 75 fought hard for enthusiasts. The 320i’s mix of build quality, ergonomics and rear‑drive engagement helped cement BMW’s “Ultimate Driving Machine” image across Europe. It also broadened the 3 Series’ appeal through multiple body styles: two‑ and four‑door saloons, the factory Cabriolet (1985) and the clever Touring estate (1987), the latter inspired by engineer Max Reisböck’s after‑hours prototype—a fun fact that has since become BMW lore.

Mid‑cycle updates in 1987 brought lighter plastic bumpers, revised lighting, Motronic engine management and incremental efficiency/emissions improvements. Buyers could add an optional limited‑slip differential, ABS (later more widely standard), sports suspension and the desirable M‑Technic appearance packs with BBS cross‑spoke wheels. Market‑specific curiosities included the 320is for Italy and Portugal—fitted with a 2.0‑litre S14 twin‑cam derived from the M3 to dodge tax bands—though the mainstream 320i remained the smooth operator of the line‑up.

While the E30 M3 took headlines in touring‑car racing, the 320i quietly became a status symbol for Europe’s young professionals and even saw service with some police fleets. It was never sold as a 320i in the United States (where 318i/325e/325i models carried the torch), adding a touch of European exclusivity to the badge. By the end of production in 1991, as the E36 loomed, the E30 320i had helped define the template for generations of compact sports saloons: compact footprint, sweet six‑cylinder heart, rear‑drive purity and everyday usability.
